Meditation on ‘Soft gaze’
Imagine the reptilian brain as a constant source of raw data - fear, desire, aggression, and the need for self-preservation. These primal signals are picked up by the neocortex, which translates them into thoughts and narratives, creating what we experience as the ego. This process forms the egoic mind, a voice that constantly analyzes, plans, and worries to keep us safe. The default mode network (DMN) amplifies this by creating mind loops and repetitive thoughts, reinforcing the feeling of being a separate “you” and making the ego’s narratives feel personal and real.
The ego isn’t just a psychological or spiritual construct; it is deeply rooted in human biology, driven by these powerful survival impulses. Seeing it this way can help us respect the ego’s role while also recognizing the space to observe and transcend it.
