Be your own brain doctor
Be your own brain doctor today and investigate what thoughts are. Really look at what your thoughts do, how they reference each other. Try to predict when a thought comes. Can you sense when it leaves? Can you see where it comes from? Do you know if you truly created the thought? Can you stop a thought? And in the moments between thoughts, can you feel the space? How does that space feel? Is there an intimate feeling there, when you rest in the quiet between thoughts?
The ego doesn’t like emptiness. It craves attachment, constantly seeking to fill the silence when there’s a pause. When emptiness arises, the ego rushes to avoid it, filling it with thoughts and emotions. This is totally autonomous - you can’t help it. But just understanding this can already be a big first step.
In the coming period, I’ll be writing more about the Vedantic and Tantric differences, particularly in their approaches towards ego contraction. I’ll also be recording some guided meditations - or guided “non-meditations” - designed to help people experience glimpses of non-dual awareness.
